Barrow Table Tennis Centre was founded in 1993 when the local council were going to demolish an old gym at Parkview School.
John Reed, who was Chairman of the local Barrow and District League was contacted by Roger Harris who ran the Parkview Table Tennis club and between them ,had the vision that the redundant gym could provide a purpose-built Table Tennis Centre.
John assembled a team of dedicated volunteers who began the process of obtaining grants, planning permission ,and with help from Parkview School, Barrow and Cumbria County Councils, the building of the Centre was started and eventually culminated in the opening in 1993.
Further ongoing development has made the centre one of the top Table Tennis facilities in the North. It has provided many Junior international players and has also has played host to Junior International events.
In 2004 the directors organised a very successful Senior International match between England and Holland, which drew a very enthusiastic crowd of 550.
England eventually won the last game to win the match 3-2. The centre was used in this instance as the practice and demonstration venue.
In 2005 we were awarded the Premier Club Status by the ETTA and are currently sponsoring and running 3 British League teams. We have also appointed Duncan Crawford to the position of Community coach to liaise with local schools and offer coaching within the school curriculum.
